Wedding Party Duties: Who Does What

By the Online Wedding Planner Team · Updated 2026-06-02 · ~8 min read

Being asked to be in a wedding party is an honor — and a job. The roles come with real responsibilities (and real costs) that aren't always spelled out when someone pops the question. Whether you're choosing your wedding party or you've just been asked to be in one, here's exactly what each role involves.

Who's in the wedding party?

A typical wedding party includes a maid or matron of honor, a best man, bridesmaids, groomsmen, and sometimes ushers, flower attendants and a ring bearer. Roles are increasingly mix-and-match — a "man of honor," a "best woman," or a mixed-gender party are all common now.

Maid (or matron) of honor

The right hand. The MOH usually:

  • Helps plan and host the bridal shower and bachelorette party.
  • Coordinates the bridesmaids — dresses, fittings, schedules.
  • Is a sounding board and calm presence throughout planning.
  • On the day: arrives early, helps the bride dress, holds the bouquet during the ceremony, and keeps the bridal party on schedule.
  • Gives a toast at the reception.

Best man

The groom's counterpart:

  • Plans the bachelor party and rallies the groomsmen.
  • Holds the rings (or knows who does) until the exchange.
  • On the day: gets the groomsmen dressed and on time, distributes boutonnieres, and keeps the groom calm.
  • Often handles vendor tips and small day-of logistics.
  • Gives a toast at the reception.

Bridesmaids

  • Buy their own dress, shoes and accessories, and attend fittings.
  • Help with shower and bachelorette planning and attend pre-wedding events.
  • Pitch in with DIY projects, favors or decor if asked.
  • On the day: help the bride get ready, walk in the processional, and add energy on the dance floor.

Groomsmen and ushers

  • Rent or buy their attire and attend fittings.
  • Help plan the bachelor party and attend pre-wedding events.
  • On the day: arrive early, greet and seat guests, hand out programs, and escort bridesmaids in the processional.
  • Usher vs. groomsman: an usher's main job is seating guests and handling programs; they're often not part of the processional. Groomsmen do both.

What it costs to be in a wedding party

This is the part couples should keep in mind when building their list. Wedding party members typically pay for:

ExpenseTypical range
Attire (dress/suit rental, shoes, accessories)$100–$400+
Hair & makeup (often expected of bridesmaids)$75–$250
Shower & bachelor/bachelorette costsVaries widely — travel can dominate
Travel & lodging$0–$1,000+
A wedding giftCustomary but not required

If you're the couple: being upfront about expected costs — and keeping attire and events reasonable — is one of the kindest things you can do for your wedding party.

A rough timeline

  1. After the engagement: say yes, get to know the other party members.
  2. 6–9 months out: attire shopping and fittings; start shower/bachelor(ette) planning.
  3. 1–2 months out: events happen; confirm day-of timing.
  4. Rehearsal & rehearsal dinner: learn the processional order. (See our rehearsal dinner guide.)
  5. Wedding day: arrive early, follow the timeline, and support the couple.

How to be a great wedding party member

  • Reply promptly and hit deadlines (fittings, payments, RSVPs).
  • Be honest about your budget early rather than dropping out late.
  • On the day, your job is to make the couple's life easier — anticipate, don't wait to be asked.

Choosing your wedding party

Pick people who are reliable and supportive, not just those you feel obligated to include. Parties don't need to be symmetrical or large — a single honor attendant each is perfectly modern. Whoever stands beside you also shapes your toasts and getting-ready photos, so choose the people you actually want there.

Frequently asked questions

What does the maid of honor do?

The maid of honor helps plan the shower and bachelorette party, coordinates the bridesmaids, supports the bride through planning, and on the wedding day helps her dress, holds the bouquet during the ceremony, keeps the party on schedule, and gives a toast.

What does the best man do?

The best man plans the bachelor party, organizes the groomsmen, often holds the rings, and on the day gets the groomsmen ready and on time, hands out boutonnieres, keeps the groom calm, sometimes handles vendor tips, and gives a toast.

Do bridesmaids pay for their own dresses?

Traditionally yes — bridesmaids buy their own dress, shoes and accessories and pay for fittings, and often hair and makeup too. Some couples choose to cover part of these costs, but the bridesmaid typically pays unless told otherwise.

How many people should be in a wedding party?

There's no rule. Many couples have three to six attendants on each side, but a single honor attendant each is perfectly modern, and large parties are fine too. Choose reliable, supportive people rather than aiming for a specific number or symmetry.

What's the difference between a groomsman and an usher?

An usher's main job is seating guests and handing out programs before the ceremony, and they're often not part of the processional. Groomsmen do the ushering tasks and also walk in the processional, escort bridesmaids, and join the wedding party throughout.
